Recreation Therapy or Therapeutic Recreation uses treatment, education, and recreation services to help people with illness, disabilities, and other conditions to develop and use their leisure in ways that enhance their health, functional abilities, independence, and quality of life (NTRS 2000). Recreational Therapy is provided by trained professionals who are certified and/or licensed to provide services.
At Simple Steps, LLC, we employ Recreation Therapists to provide home and community based therapeutic programming to meet the needs of Veterans with traumatic brain injury, neurological disorders, and/or physical disabilities. Our therapists work with Veterans and their families to provide leisure education, which includes teaching
- leisure awareness,
- leisure skills,
- and recreation participation
Recreation Therapy Activities and Outings
At Simple Steps, LLC, we tailor our programs to meet the needs of Veterans; therefore, we evaluate each of our clients to determine the best method of service delivery to ensure greater
- community independence,
- community mobility,
- community reintegration,
- safety awareness,
- community resources,
- peer support,
- and leisure understanding and exploration
Our clients may participate in therapeutic outings, including but not limited to the following:
- community festivals,
- movies,
- bowling,
- grocery shopping,
- zoo,
- park,
- garden center,
- landscaping,
- wood working,
- art classes,
- and local shopping.
Clients with specific interests are encouraged to share them with their therapists through their evaluations and/or ongoing evaluation of their program goals.
In our Recreation Therapy programs, we believe therapeutic activities are very important. Learning in home skills, transitional life skills, and leisure skills is important.
Therapeutic activities may include but are not limited to the following:
- household management support (organization support),
- sports (participation or spectator),
- community arts and crafts,
- scrap-booking,
- computer education,
- card games,
- board games,
- music activities,
- cooking/baking,
- and puzzles.
Note: Activities and Outings are subject to approval by the the team. Additionally, some activities and outings may require a physician's order.
